Last night, fans saw 28-year-old Matty celebrate after he was crowned winner of the Channel 4 show and he now has another reason to be over the moon.

On Tuesday, the star revealed that he had popped the question to his girlfriend - and shared that Lara was actually responsible for signing him up for the competition.

The official Bake Off X account, formerly known as Twitter, posted a photo of the happy couple and penned: "A huge congratulations from all of us at Bake Off to Matty and Lara on their engagement!"

In the sweet photo, which shows off Lara's engagement ring, Matty can be seen cuddling Lara as he kisses her on the cheek.

Bake Off fans raced to congratulate the pair, with one writing: "I thought he was going to propose on the show when he said he needed Lara."

Another posted: "Honestly one of the loveliest things is how much he so clearly loves her! It came out in everything he said and did on the show, even when he won he went running to her saying “I need you”."

A third added: "I loved the way he gave Lara all the credit I wish them well for their future together."

PE and science teacher Matty beat finalists Dan Hunter and Josh Smalley after wowing the judges with a three-tiered chocolate cake in the Showstopper challenge.

Following his win, Matty made an emotional speech, saying: " I don't know what to say. People said, 'You should go on Bake Off', and I just thought it was a throwaway comment, I never really listened to it. I never thought I would be on this, let alone win it."

He later thanked Lara, who was present at the big finale, for applying for the show on his behalf.

And his victory was endorsed by both judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood in the end, with the latter admitting he was blown away by Matty’s chocolate cake.

Prue said: “I have never met a more cheerful, smiling, uncomplaining and willing baker.

“He was just having such a good time, learning as much as he could, taking on board everything either of us said.”

Paul added ‘He just got better and better and better and if you are going to smash it you do it in the last challenge, and that is exactly what he did.

“That chocolate cake was one of the best chocolate cakes I have had for a long, long time.”
