AN expert has revealed a hidden material in your homes that could affect your Wi-Fi connection.

There are all sorts of objects that can interfere with the signal, such as your TV if it's too close to the router.

But a less-known Wi-Fi disruptor could be within your walls, according to Hal Ponton, Chief Architect at Voneus Broadband.

This is especially the case for newer homes with the latest insulation technology.

And it all comes down to the silver backing on them.

"If you've got rooms with silver backed insulation on, potentially if you've built an extension to your house and you've got the latest and greatest insulation technology that's probably one of the worst places," he explained to The Sun.

"Nowadays most homes are being built almost like a faraday cage in every room rather than just being able to get service through it."

Similarly, we've previously heard how metal beams in kitchen extensions can have a similar bad impact.

If this is the case in your home, it might be best to try and move your router somewhere else.

Usually, a central spot is best.

Allowing your router space away from other big objects is also important.

The higher the better too, so signals can spread upstairs - instead of leaving the router on the floor.

Asked about other potential issues, Hal revealed that microwave interference is just an urban myth.

"Unless you've got a very bad microwave it doesn't necessarily affect it anymore," he said.
