The campaign started in July but only targeted Windows users at the time.

It did that by inundating users with fake Chrome update prompts via JavaScript injections, BleepingComputer reported.

Now, the malware targets Apple users who come across compromised websites while browsing.

On November 17, 2023, threat analyst Ankit Anubhav tweeted: "The #Clearfake campaign which is abusing Binance blockchain is not limited to Windows #malware.

"Open the same website from your Mac and then it will download a malicious OSX dmg for you (Atom stealer)."

WHAT CAN THE MALWARE DO?

Malware is a malicious file or code that can infect your phone or computer.

It can steal data from your device, including passwords to important accounts.

Atomic Stealer can also hack files from the victim's computer, such as documents, photos, and videos.

Perhaps most notably, Atmoic Stealer can hack over 50 cryptocurrency extensions and keychain passwords.

This stolen data is then typically sent to the attacker's servers, where it can be used for several malicious purposes.

The most common crimes committed via malware are identity theft, financial fraud, and extortion.

HOW TO CHECK FOR MALWARE

If you think that your Mac may have been infected with Atomic Stealer, you should immediately scan your computer with an antivirus program.

You can also sift through your extensions on your browser to see if you spot any fishy software.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

It's very important to always keep your device updated with the latest software.

You should avoid installing apps from unofficial stores as they could be malware.

Furthermore, you should never download anything from strange pop-up windows.
