Best. Christmas. Ever. premiered on Netflix on 16 November, but has been blasted by a barrage of criticism, as fans say the film does not live up to its title.

The film follows two frenemies who reconnect after years. “Every Christmas Jackie sends a boastful holiday newsletter that makes her old college friend Charlotte feel like a lump of coal,” the movie’s official synopsis reads.

It continues: “When a twist of fate lands Charlotte and her family on Jackie’s snowy doorstep just days before Christmas, she seizes the opportunity to prove her old friend’s life can’t possibly be that perfect.”

The movie leans into a lot of Christmas tropes and emphasises the message of coming together at Christmas. “It’s not as easy as it sounds, though,” director Mary Lambert told Tudum of Jackie and Charlotte overcoming their differences.

But she added that’s an important message, and it’s done in a fun way for fans to enjoy. “I think for me, the movie tries to say … let’s find something to laugh at in all this craziness,” she said.

The holiday movie features a star-studded cast, including I Still Know What You Did Last Summer’s Brandy Norwood and Love, Guaranteed actor Heather Graham as Jackie and Charlotte, respectively. Jason Biggs and Matt Cedeño round out the main cast.

However, the film fell flat from critics who gave it a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. It has an even lower audience rating of 19%.

Since its release viewers have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to criticise the film, calling it “boringly predictable” and even “shameful.”

One Netflix fan wrote: “Best. Christmas. Ever! could possibly be the worst Christmas movie ever.”

A second viewer agreed: “Best. Christmas. Ever! on Netflix is the..Worst. Film. Ever.”

“Avoid or, even better, poke your eyes out. That’s far more enjoyable than putting yourself through this waste of 1.5hrs,” commented a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth Netflix fan called the movie shameful. “Netflix’s Best Christmas Ever is the worst movie I’ve ever watched.. you guys should be ashamed for airing this,” they said.

Questioning how the film was even made, a viewer griped: “Who green-lit Best. Christmas. ever on Netflix? And is this person still employed? It’s the most unhinged movie I’ve ever watched.”

“‘Best. Christmas. Ever’ on Netflix may simply be the absolute worst Christmas movie I have ever suffered through,” another viewer added in agreement.

Blasting the streamer, another social media user commented, “I find Netflix just makes really bad Christmas movies now.”
