Cabinet minister hits back at James Cleverly as tensions grow over Rwanda asylum plan
A CABINET minister rapped the Home Secretary yesterday as tensions grew over the Rwanda asylum plan.
Treasury Chief Secretary Laura Trott hit back at James Cleverly’s comment that the scheme was not “the be-all or end-all”.
Ms Trott said the deterrent was central to PM Rishi Sunak’s border controls and the mere threat of it was helping slash migrant boats.
And Mr Sunak told The Mail on Sunday he was “prepared to do whatever is necessary” to get the scheme, ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court, up and running.
No10 had hoped Mr Cleverly would calm Tory tensions when he replaced Suella Braverman.
But the ex-Army officer was branded "Colonel Calamity” by the right-wing New Conservatives.

The group wrote to the PM to say nothing must be ruled out to get Rwanda flights going — including changing human rights laws.
A source close to Mr Cleverly said he was focused on controlling borders rather than “soundbite nicknames”.
Meanwhile, the government continues to reel from 750,000 net migration figures.
They are stimulating neo-Nazis, Home Office minister Laura Farris told Times Radio.
