Ms Trott said the deterrent was central to PM Rishi Sunak’s border controls and the mere threat of it was helping slash migrant boats.

No10 had hoped Mr Cleverly would calm Tory tensions when he replaced Suella Braverman.

A source close to Mr Cleverly said he was focused on controlling borders rather than “soundbite nicknames”.

Meanwhile, the government continues to reel from 750,000 net migration figures.

Labour said it would seek to return net migration to normal levels at a “couple of hundred thousand a year”.
